Making an entrance

Master Gardener Kim Garner will chat to anyone about home food growing. We caught up with her for a chat

“Giving away a few lettuce plants is a great hook. My household was so excited! They phoned me up when they had their first meal. There were already good gardeners, but not grown food before.

“One positive slant of the recession is people want to save money. Buying a £1 lettuce every week is £4 a month, and you can buy seed packets to last all season with that! Even when we’re affluent again, I’d like growing habits started now to continue.”

Kim showing Fran the household pack with growing advice

Kim’s latest household is BBC radio presenter Fran. Listeners have heard their tomatoes, lettuces, and peppers grow up during broadcasts. The pair have sown seed, potted up, tied in, eaten, and named the peppers after the seven dwarfs. Fran said: “Grumpy is oddly cheerful! I’m delighted with my tomatoes too and looking forward to my salad!”

    Hi Kim,

Desperately need your advice otherwise a divorce is pending!! My wife thinks she heard you on Woman’s Own and you claimed there was no need to cover a compost heap. We have just changed from plastic bins to a home made one from pallets – large about 1.25 mts square. Following some other male gardening gurus with the accolade of TV ‘Truths’ I have covered the heap with an old bit of roofing felt to dry it out and raise temperature to aid decomposition of contents. We garden about 1/2 acre on loamy/clay soil in Hooke Dorset. Topsoil only about 8-12 inches with flint below so compost is essential. Any help really grateful for.
